Air Filtration Reduced Sick Days 55% in Child Care Facilities - In this study in Sweden, a loud, expensive air filtration system was installed in one daycare facility for the second year of the three year study. In year one, two child care facilities were monitored and had average absenteeism from respiratory illness of about 9.7%. In the second year one child care facility had the air filtered 10 air changes per hour, and the rate of illness dropped 55% in the facility that had filtered air. In the second facility, without air filtration, the absentee rate from respiratory illness stayed near the 9.8% level.. In the third year both facilities had no air filtration and sickness rates again rose to about 9.8% in both facilities. Purifans filter the air about 40 times per hour and elementary schools have reported a 61% drop in absenteeism compred to the prior year. This is partly due to allergy and asthma improvements, and partly because aggressive air filtration reduces the spread of contagious illnesses like colds and flu.
